Green Initiative

Our Green Effort

ConservatoryNewBuilding_1On June 22, 2009, Solar Innovations, Inc. moved to Pine Grove, PA (approximately 20 minutes North of the previous location) and into a custom designed and built facility which was carefully evaluated on all fronts and especially against LEED standards and “Green” Business Practices. The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building System is the national benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green buildings.

Solar Innovations, Inc. was granted official LEED Gold Certification on February 23rd, by the USGBC for its new, state-of-the-art, 200,000 sq. ft. facility located in thePine Grove Industrial Park, Pine Grove, Pennsylvania. After months of hard work and dedication, the Solar Innovations LEED team was granted 62 points towards the LEED Certification allowing it to receive the gold status.

Eco-friendly LEED objectives incorporated into our new facility’s design are:

  • Preferred parking for energy efficient and carpool vehicles

  • Bike racks

  • Refurbished furniture

  • A roof prepared for Photovoltaic Panels

  • A windmill to generate energy

  • A cistern to collect rain water

  • CFL Light Blubs

  • Orientation to viewing the natural environment

  • Complete recycling program

  • Bio-Retention basins to filter and treat storm water runoff. (Bio-retention basins reduce pollutants, reduce erosion, and increase biodiversity in landscape with wildlife and aesthetic values.)

Beyond these LEED factors, Solar Innovations, Inc. has made environmentally conscious building choices like low VOC paint and replaceable carpet and ceramic squares to help make the new facility greener than our current location. The incorporation of our own structures, a transom window pattern around the entire building, and over 10,000 square feet of glass will ensure we have lots of light. Motion censored lights will also help to control energy use. Exposed beam ceilings have been selected for the building as they will allow for easy repairs to the lighting systems and wiring without requiring further ceiling repair. Low flow porcelain fixtures as well as recycled content paper products, foam soap, and green cleaning products will also be utilized in the new facility. The building’s landscape and grounds will be cared for organically and include a compost pile to ensure the gardens flourish.

In the future, Solar intends to continue to expand our environmentally-conscious endeavors. The company will strive for LEED Platinum Certification in Maintenance and Operations, as well as Cradle to Grave certification. Cradle to Grave Certification provides a company with a means to tangibly and credibly measure achievement in environmentally-intelligent design, and also helps customers purchase and specify products that are pursuing a broader definition of quality.

Finally, in an effort to increase environmental awareness and assist our customers in achieving Green Building initiatives, such as LEED certification, the company will be providing additional information on how our products can help achieve this environmentally-friendly objective.
