Solar Innovations® Bifold Doors Part of Best Skyscraper Award

PINE GROVE, PA – An office building, incorporating a Folding Glass Wall System designed and manufactured by Solar Innovations® Architectural Glazing Systems, won an award in the Best Skyscrapers/High Rises category for the 2021 American Architecture Awards.

Completed in 2020 and nestled between North Wacker Drive and the Chicago River, this state-of-the-art Class A, 56-story office building features 1,770,000 square feet of floor space in the heart of Chicago’s business district. The designs by Goettsch Partners for the Bank of America Tower called for a 45-foot-high lobby with an impressive operable wall that opens a large portion of the north face at street level to a landscaped, urban pedestrian walkway.

Solar Innovations® provided a massive nine-panel bifold door system that spanned 43 feet. Each 8’4” x 4’8” glazed panel folded to the exterior of the building, creating a welcoming portal that connected the park-like setting outside with the airy lobby, blurring the line between the indoors and outdoors. The thermally-enhanced framing was color-matched to the framing of the building and encased one-inch insulated glass units for each panel.

Located in Pine Grove, PA, Solar Innovations® was founded in 1998 and produces glazed door, window, skylight, and structure systems for residential and commercial customers worldwide.
